Change the iPad’s volume buttons according to their orientation
When the sixth-generation iPad mini arrived last fall, it became Apple’s first tablet to offer a Smart Volume Button Orientation feature (shown above). Now that the rest of the iPad range has expanded, follow the instructions on how to change your iPad’s volume buttons to suit its orientation.
Spotted by Matt Birchler, Apple recently added the ability to customize the volume buttons on other iPads.
During our testing, we noticed a change from iPadOS 15.4 on the iPad Pro and iPad Air (interestingly, it wasn’t available in the 15.4 beta). Let us know in the comments below if you see this feature on older iPads, we hope you do.
The default setting enabled on the iPad is Fixed Volume Control. But now with the option to disable this option, the volume buttons will dynamically change depending on the orientation of the iPad.
While it may take a while since fixed volume buttons have been the norm for the past decade, it’s nice to have the option of dynamic buttons.
Change the iPad volume buttons according to the orientation
Open the Settings app on your iPad (with iPadOS 15.4)
Select Sounds in the left sidebar
At the bottom you can disable the volume control in a fixed position
Volume up (+) will now stay to the right or increase when you hold the iPad in landscape or portrait orientation—either direction.
Volume down (-) will remain on the left or bottom in landscape or portrait orientation.
Note that the 6th generation iPad mini is set up differently than the rest of the iPad, with the volume buttons on the same side as the top button. Most iPads have the volume buttons on the opposite side of the top button.
